The Philippines is extending its ban on travelers from seven countries as a "proactive" measure to thwart the spread of the Delta variant of coronavirus that was first reported in India, Malacañang said Tuesday.

Travelers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, and Oman will be prohibited entry in the Philippines until July 15, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said.

"Isa itong pro-active measure sa patuloy na pagpapatupad in international border control dahil sa COVID-19 Delta variant," he said in a Palace press briefing.

The travel ban covering the said countries was supposed to expire on June 30.

Since the start of the pandemic, the Philippines has reported over 1.4 million COVID-19 cases of which some 1.3 million have recovered.
