The Philippines on Tuesday recorded 8,560 new COVID-19 cases, the Department of Health said, as hospital wards and intensive care units approach full capacity during the lockdown.

This brings the total number of active cases to 79,016. Also on Tuesday, the DOh reported 92 deaths and 7,964 recoveries.

Metro Manila is on its fifth day of ECQ, or the strictest quarantine classification, which seeks to arrest the spread of the hyper-contagious Delta variant. Those set to receive their jabs may leave their homes as the government aims to meet its target of 50 million vaccinated Filipinos by the end of 2021.

Despite stricter restrictions, the country continues to see a rise in cases, with hospitals filling up with COVID cases once again.
