The Philippines is set to receive some 250,000 doses of Moderna COVID-19 jabs on June 27, the country's vaccine czar said Sunday, as the government sought to fully inoculate millions to reopen the economy.
Sec. Carlito Galvez Jr. said the shipment includes those procured by the private sector. The American biotech firm claims 95% efficiency for the vaccine.
Tycoon Enrique Razon led efforts for the procurement of some 20 million doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for the Philippines. Seven million doses of the vaccine order will be allotted to frontline workers of the private sector while 13 million will be used by the government.
Another 1.5 million doses of Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine doses will also be delivered to the country on June 24, Galvez said.
Also expected to arrive this month are 2,0280,000 AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine doses from the COVAX facility, and 150,000 doses of Sputnik V vaccines from Russia, he added.
For July, the government expects the delivery of some 11 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine doses, including 4.5 million Sinovac shots, one million doses each of Moderna and Sputnik V, and 1.17 million AstraZeneca jobs purchased by the private sector.
Galvez said the Philippines so far administered over eight million COVID-19 vaccine doses, of which 5.9 million were first doses and two million were second doses. The country also logged an average of one million vaccinations per week over the past two consecutive weeks this month.
Some 50 million Filipinos should be vaccinated against COVID-19 by November this year, authorities said for the government to achieve its target of "population protection."
