Pope Francis offered condolences to Filipinos over the death of former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, according to his letter to incumbent President Rodrigo Duterte that was released by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines.
Aquino, 61, died of renal disease secondary to diabetes on Thursday, June 24. He was president during Francis's only visit so far to the Philippines in January 2015.
"Saddened to learn of the death of former President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the people of the Philippines," the Pope said.
"Recalling the late president's service to the nation, I commend his soul into the hands of the all-merciful God. Upon his family and all who mourn his passing, I invoke abundant consolation and peace in the Lord."
