Pop star Taylor Swift on Monday shocked fans all over the world when she said that her 10th studio album, "Midnights", was in progress, giving Swifties another reason to stay up late at night until its Oct. 21 release.

Swift made the surprise announcement as she thanked her fans after winning Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards for "All Too Well: The Short Film".

"I had sort of made up my mind that if you were going to be this generous and give us this, I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand new album comes out October 21st," Swift said in her acceptance speech, drawing screams from the audience.

"Midnights" is the first new album that Swift will release since 2020's "Evermore". Last year, she became one of the highest paid artists following the release of her re-recorded albums "Fearless (Taylor's Version)" and "Red (Taylor's Version)".

Here's everything we know about Swift's upcoming album:

What is the album all about?

In her post which came out at midnight on Monday (U.S. time), Swift said "Midnights" is "a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams."

The album will contain 13 songs, which the pop icon described as "stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life."

Swift is known for writing songs that are based on her personal life, although for 2020's "Folklore" and "Evermore", she veered away from creating anecdotal music to focus on imaginary characters and settings.

Based on her description of her new album, "Midnights" could mark Swift's return to writing songs about her personal experiences.

The number 13 is also significant, as Swift considers it as her lucky number and she was born on Dec. 13, 1989. Internet stans also pointed out that the Oct. 21 release is an Easter egg for the number 13 (10+2+1 equals to 13).

What inspired Swift to write "Midnights"?

Swift dedicated her upcoming album to "those who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching."

The pop icon has previously written songs about self-discovery and self-love, including "I Forgot that You Existed" and "Daylight" from 2019's "Lover", "Shake It Off" and "Clean" from 2014's "1989", "Never Grow Up" from 2010's "Speak Now", and "Fifteen" from 2008's "Fearless" and its re-recorded version.

It's possible that Swift will sing more about finding oneself in the middle of turmoil in her new album, as she said so herself: "...hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve... we'll meet ourselves."

The album's aesthetic also gives fans a glimpse of what "Midnights" will be all about, showcasing dark shades of blue which some compared to "1989"'s colors. The album artwork also depicts Swift flicking a lighter, with her eyelids in the same shades of blue.

It's still unknown how Swift's new album will sound, as she is known for experimenting with different genres throughout her career, although BeyondVinyl suggests that "Midnights" could be a mix of pop, country, and rock songs.

How can you avail Swift's new album?

While Oct. 21 is still seven weeks away, fans can now pre-order Swift's new album through her website in the following formats: CD, cassette, vinyl, and digital download.

Fans can also now pre-save the album through Spotify and Apple Music, which will automatically add it in their music libraries once it's released.

And since Swift is known for releasing singles in the lead up to the album's release, fans can also expect that at least one or two songs may drop before Oct. 21.
