Sen. Manny Pacquiao said Monday he would withdraw his candidacy for President if he receives a sign from God, responding to a question as political forces realign with one month of campaigning left.
Pacquiao said he was willing to withdraw up to one day before the May 9 elections, as long as he receives a sign from the Lord. The retired champion boxer is a devout Christian.
"Pag may conviction ang Panginoon sa akin na 'wag ka na tumuloy, sino ba naman ako para kontrahin ang Panginoon," Pacquiao told reporters in Manila.
"Pag may convitcion may pinakita sa akin ang Panginoon mag-witdhraw ako kahit Two days before the election or one day before the election. Pag may instruction ang Panginoon sa akin, susundin ko," he said.
Pacquiao is statistically tied for third place with Manila Mayor Isko Moreno in Pulse Asia's Feb. 18 to 23 poll that showed dictator's son and former senator Bongbong Marcos leading with 60%, followed by Vice President Leni Robredo with 15%.
That data was culled one month before Robredo attracted tens of thousands in campaign rallies and before another rival in the presidential race, Sen. Panfilo Lacson, lost the support of his Partido Reporma, whose leaders switched to Robredo.
