2,087 COVID Cases Logged as Palace Insists on Face Shield Status Quo

The Philippines on Monday tallied 2,087 new COVID-19 cases as authorities review the face shield rule, which some cities have dropped a year after it was made mandatory.

The day's tally brought active cases to 32,077. The Department of Health also reported 3,510 new recoveries and 91 new deaths.

Overall, a total of 2,805,294 COVID-19 cases have been reported since the pandemic began in March 2020, of which 2,728,696 have recovered and 44,521 died.

Metro Manila shifted to Alert Level 2 on Nov. 5 allowing businesses and establishments to operate at higher capacities. The quarantine classification is set to expire on Nov. 21.

The local governments of Davao City and Iloilo dropped the face shield requirement last week, with the city of Manila following on Monday. DOH urged Metro Manila mayors to uphold the face shield requirement until a national policy is implemented.

Face shields are still required in 3Cs (closed, crowded, close-contact) setting. President Rodrigo Duterte removed the face shield requirement in outdoor areas in September.
