A 14-day-old baby who died in Igbaras, Iloilo on last week was found to have COVID-19, the town mayor, Jaime Esmeralda, said on Facebook.
Born on July 30, the baby boy was swabbed on the night of Aug. 13, after he was pronounced dead at the hospital. His results came out positive the following day, according to a separate report on the Philippine Star.
The baby, immunized with Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) to protect against tuberculosis, experienced swelling with rashes at the injection site on the night of Aug. 10, according to the report.
His mother brought him back to the rural health unit the following day for allergy medication. The baby had difficulty breathing and turned bluish that night, the mayor said.
Esmeralda said it was not clear where the baby contracted the coronavirus.
Personnel of the rural health unit exposed to the baby will undergo swab testing Monday, postponing the COVID-19 vaccination rollout there, the mayor said.
