Former Eraserheads frontman Ely Buendia on Sunday hinted that a reunion of the popular 90s band may not happen even as Vice President Leni Robredo filed her presidential bid, saying that his previous tweet about it was merely a "joke."
Buendia recently went viral for saying that Eraserheads could reunite "kapag tumakbo si Leni." While he didn't give specifics, fans were quick to show their excitement, so much so after Robredo actually joined the presidential race in the 2022 elections.
"I may joke about frivolous things like an old band getting back together, but I’m dead serious about our people’s future. #LetLeniLead," Buendia said in a tweet.
Buendia also clarified that his tweet was a "half serious joke" that people made a big deal out of.
“That answer was far from a political post. I do respect and admire Leni. If I were to vote, she’s my top candidate right now," he said during the press conference for his virtual concert Superproxies, as quoted by PEP.ph.
Fans couldn't hide their dismay about Buendia's clarification, saying that, unlike him, they were not joking about wanting to have an Eraserheads reunion.
"Do not joke about those kinds of things, old band getting back together is important before anyone of us can start shaping our future, wag ganun tol," said one netizen.
As a compromise, other netizens suggested to Buendia to allow Robredo to use Eraserheads songs for her campaign.
After disbanding in 2002, Eraserheads had two reunion concerts in 2008 and 2009. They also reunited for a gig in 2016.
