A man caught outside his house in General Trias City during curfew hours could barely walk when he came home the next morning after he was punished by police with exercise, his partner said Tuesday. He died later that day.
Darren Penaredondo was in pain after finishing a minimum 100 reps of "pumping," which eventually increased since he and other curfew violators need to do each rep at the same time, said Reichelyn Balce.
Authorities are investigating Penaredondo's death, a test case on how curfew violators should be punished. Corporal punishment is "strictly prohibited" and penalties are largely left to local ordinances, said the Department of Interior and Local Government.
