How to convince Filipinos to get vaccinated against COVID-19? Sen. Richard Gordon, who heads the Philippine Red Cross, proposed handing out free donuts and coffee, a model employed in the U.S.
Gordon said he had reached out to Dunkin Donuts to replicate what Krispy Kreme did in America. "One donut if you get a vaccination," he said in a virtual media forum of the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines.
The PRC head said he also talked to Starbucks Philippines.
In the U.S., Krispy Kreme is offering anyone who can show a valid COVID-19 vaccination card one free donut per day for the rest of the year in a bid to get more people to vaccinate.
Apart from giving incentives, Gordon said more medical frontliners should get vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to push more Filipinos to receive the vaccine.
"We need doctors, nurses, frontliners, so we want to make sure that they are vaccinated first," he said.
"You're not going to do it overnight, but at least they have the confidence that not only are they safe, they're secured that their families are safe as well and so other doctors will now get vaccinated and be able to help encourage more vaccination for our people," he said.
As of May 12, over 2 million Filipinos have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while more 565,000 have been fully vaccinated, according to data from the Department of Health.
