Metro Manila's 5G Speed Lags Behind Asia Pacific Mega Cities: Study

Still, Filipinos report big improvement vs. 4G.

Metro Manila's 5G internet speed lags behind its fellow mega cities in the Asia Pacific, despite improvements over 4G connectivity, industry tracker Opensignal said.

Among 11 cities covered in the study, Metro Manila had the second slowest upload speed at 14.4 Mbps and the fourth slowest download speed at 150.7 Mbps.

Seoul reported the fastest download speed in the region at  453.1 Mbps followed by Kuala Lumpur at 376.6 Mbps, and Auckland at 280.7 Mbps.

Metro Manila registered the worst score of 66.6 out of 100 among 11 Asia Pacific cities in terms of 5G games experience. Seoul again reported the highest rating of 87.2 followed by Singapore with 85.1 and Indonesia's Jakarta with 83.7.

In terms of 5G video experience, Metro Manila had the fourth lowest score of 71.6 on a scale of 100. Taiwan's Taipei had the highest rating of 81.3 followed by Auckland at 80, and Singapore and Hong Kong, both got a score of 78.6 respectively.

Even if Metro Manila scored poorly in 5G internet speed compared to its Asia Pacific peers, the Philippine capital however reported the biggest experience improvement in comparison to the prevailing 4G.

Metro Manila reported a 54% improvement in 5G video experience compared to 4G--the highest in the region. It was also second when it comes to the 5G and 4G internet speed difference, reporting the former to be seven times faster than the latter.

"When we look at the improvement in users’ experience when streaming mobile video, our users in Metropolitan Manila saw the greatest uplift — their 5G Video Experience score of 71.6 was 54% higher than their 4G Video Experience," the report stated.

Adoption of 5G in the Philippines is still in its early stages with the majority of users in Metro Manila but telco firms have committed to continuously roll it out to the rest of the Philippines.
