The Philippines on Tuesday tallied 1,019 new infections, setting a new record low for 2022 for the fourth day straight.

Cases have been declining since Feb. 19 with 1,923 cases, Feb. 20 with 1,712 infections, and Feb. 21 with 1,427 cases.

Tuesday's total brought active cases to 56,668. The Department of Health also reported 13 deaths and 2,988 recoveries.

The positivity rate was at 6.4% meaning that for every 100 people tested, at least six were infected with the coronavirus.

Since the pandemic started in March 2020, the Philippines has in total confirmed 3,654,284 COVID-19 cases, including 3,541,840 recoveries and 55,776 deaths.

Authorities are studying a possible shift to Alert Level 1, the lowest and least strict level in a five-step classification system, as cases go down. Campaigns for the May 9 elections could pose risks, the Department of Local and Interior Government earlier said.

More countries have relaxed restrictions two years after the coronavirus was first detected. England is set to remove all COVID restrictions later this week, a first in the west.
