A Commission on Elections official on Sunday appealed to the government to vaccinate their personnel against COVID-19 as they prepared to hold the 2022 elections during the pandemic.
Comelec personnel are exposed to the virus as preparations are ongoing one year before the vote, Commissioner Rowena Guanzon told dzBB. This includes registering millions of new voters until Sept. 30.
"Hindi naman umaayaw ang mga taga-Comelec sa trabaho. Bakunahan niyo lang kami," she said.
At present, the government has prioritized health workers, senior citizens, persons with co-morbidities, and economic frontliners for its COVID-19 vaccination program. It is targeting to vaccinate at least 50 million people to reach herd immunity by November this year.
"Bakunahan na nila ang mga tao namin kasi mabe-blame kami niyan ng taumbayan," she said.
Guanzon said Manila Mayor Isko Moreno committed to vaccinate around 350 of Comelec personnel working in the agency's main office in Intramuros.
Comelec earlier said it was aiming to register seven million new and deactivated voters in time for the 2022 elections.
