San Juan on Wednesday began inoculating its residents with Moderna vaccines, making them the first local government unit to use the U.S-made jab, Mayor Francis Zamora said Wednesday.
The city received 1,800 doses, enough for 900 persons, on Tuesday night, Zamora said.
As of Tuesday, the city has vaccinated 82.3% of its target population with the first dose, or 70,269 out of 85,400, he added. This covers 70% of the entirety of the city’s population—the recommended percentage to achieve herd immunity.
“Umaasa tayo na by July 15 ay 100% nabakunahan na sila ng first dose. Maghihintay na lang sila ng second dose,” Zamora said.
The city government has been vaccinating around 3,000 people daily with more expected once a third vaccination site opens in VMall next week. Medical frontliners (A1), senior citizens (A2), persons with comorbidities (A3), essential workers (A4), and indigent populations (A5) are in line for the vaccine.
San Juan is hoping to have all 85,400 individuals fully vaccinated with two doses by August.
