The Philippines on Thursday logged 22,820 COVID-19 cases, beating the record-high 22,415 infections set three days ago.
The day's jump brings cumulative cases since the pandemic began to 2,161,892, 166,672 of which are active.
There were 61 deaths and 12,337 recoveries reported, bringing totals to 34,733 and 1,960,487 respectively.
Due to technical issues, an additional 5,132 cases were added to the Sept. 8 tally of 12,751 infections, bringing the day's actual total to 17,883. The Department of Information and Communications Technology has since determined the cause of the error, resulting in the late release of today's case tally.
Granular lockdowns were set to be piloted in the capital region starting Wednesday, but the decision was taken back late Tuesday night, sparking frustration among restarants owners and workers preparing for dine-in services to resume.
Authorities on Thursday said the last-minute extension was in response to the call of health workers to maintain the quarantine status as the country battles surges in Delta cases.
