The Commission on Elections will allow candidates vying for national posts to use its official social media channels for online meetings or "e-rallies" for free, the poll body said in a resolution issued to ensure the fair conduct of the 2022 elections.
Under its rules and regulations for the 2022 elections campaign promulgated on Nov. 17, the Comelec will provide a platform for free livestreaming of e-rallies of each candidate for president, vice president, senator, and party-list.
The livestreaming of e-rallies will be held every night beginning Feb. 8, 2022, on the official social media channels of Comelec, it added.
The schedule for the e-rally time slots will be released at the start of the campaign period. Slots will be assigned at random, based on a televised raffle to be aired on Jan. 8.
Here's the airtime and number of slots to be allotted for national candidates:
- President: 10 minutes, 3 slots per night
- Vice president: 10 minutes, 3 slots per night
- Senator: 3 minutes, 5 slots per night
- Party-list: 3 minutes, 5 slots per night
- Political parties: 10 minutes, 3 slots per night
The e-rally livestreams will be posted on the official social media pages of Comelec. During the livestream, the candidates will be allowed to see comments from viewers, which they may choose to answer or not.
The guidelines for the conduct of e-rallies came as the Comelec expected that campaign activities for the 2022 elections would be less on touch and more on social media due to the ongoing threat of COVID-19.
