The Food and Drug Administration has cautioned the public against buying the SM Bonus brand of Cebo de Macho, a popular cream for the removal of scars, calling it an unauthorized cosmetic product.
In an advisory, the FDA said the product has no certificate of product registration as of Jan. 12 and therefore, cannot assure the product’s quality and safety.
“The use of substandard and possibly adulterated cosmetic products may result in adverse reactions including, but not limited to, skin irritation, itchiness, anaphylactic shock and organ failure," the FDA said.
To check if a product has been assessed by the FDA, consumers are advised to check the agency’s website and use the “search” feature to confirm product registration.
