GUIDE: Free Rides, Discounted Fares for Students

Students attending their first in-person classes after two years can avail free rides or discounted fares starting Monday when the new school year opens.

The options include the LRT-2 and EDSA Carousel for free rides and the MRT-3 and PNR for discounted fares.

LRT-2 Extends Operating Hours at Night

Here's your guide:

LRT-2

Students from nursery to college can ride the LRT-2 for free from Aug. 22 to Nov. 5, Mondays to Saturdays except holidays from 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Students just need to show their school ID or any proof of enrollment before they will be given a single-journey ticket.

After Nov. 5, they can avail the 20% fare discount.

Masteral and doctorate (post-graduate) students are not covered by the Libreng Sakay program.

EDSA Carousel

The EDSA Carousel Bus, which has multiple stops from Monumento to PITX and vice versa, gives free rides from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. under the service contracting program of the Department of Transportation.

Outside these hours, it continues to operate 24/7, with operators and drivers collecting fares.

Pasig River Ferry Service

The Pasig River Ferry offers free rides to commuters for both upstream and downstream trips.

The ferry operates from 7 a.m. (downstream from Pinagbuhatan station) to 6:40 p.m. (upstream from Kalawaan station).

To avail the free rides, just present a valid ID, undergo temperature checks, and fill out the manifest and commuter information sheet before boarding.

Philippine Coast Guard

The PCG said it offers Libreng Sakay between Quezon City Hall and University Belt in Manila on Monday.

Two PCG buses gave students a free lift during Monday morning rush hour, and will offer free rides again from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

MRT-3

The MRT-3 offers 20% fare discount for students including weekends and holidays, it said on Facebook.

To avail the discount, present a valid school ID or enrollment/registration form before purchasing a single journey ticket in all MRT-3 stations.

Philippine National Railways

Students can also avail 20% fare discount at the PNR, it said on Facebook.
