The Philippine General Hospital will accept COVID-19 patients again starting Tuesday, May 18, its director said Monday after a fire razed a portion of the medical center.
The hospital is expected to reopen its emergency room on Monday, PGH director Dr. Gerardo Legaspi said.
"Humingi lang po ako ng isang araw na hindi muna kami mag-a-admit ng COVID patients pero simula bukas po, mag-umpisa na kami ulit ng pagtanggap ng COVID patients," Legaspi said in a briefing.
A major COVID-19 referral center, the PGH had to evacuate some 500 patients early Sunday morning due to a fire. The blaze was concentrated in the operating room sterilization area, prompting a suspension in operations.
Legaspi said the hospital would halt surgical operations for around one to two days.
While the Bureau of Fire Protection has yet to release an official report on the fire, Legaspi said he estimates the damage left to be worth at least P50 million.
