The Philippines' food and drug agency said on Friday it has approved the emergency use of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Indian company Bharat Biotech.

Bharat Biotech has received "full emergency use authorization" for its Covaxin brand after the company completed documentary requirements," Food and Drug Administration Director General Eric Domingo told a news briefing.

The approval comes as the Philippines expands its COVID-19 vaccine supply to reach its target of "population protection" by November.

Other vaccine brands that have been authorized for emergency use in the Philippines are Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Sinovac, Johnson&Johnson, and Sputnik V.

Some 2 million Filipinos have so far been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
