The Philippines recorded 8,167 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, the Department of Health said, for a fourth straight day of new infections above 8,000 and as millions prepared to go on lockdown to halt a Delta variant-driven surge.
There were 8,562 cases last Friday, 8,147 last Saturday and 8,735 last Sunday, according to DOH data. The last time the country saw daily numbers exceeding the 8,000 mark was back in May 2, which saw 8,346 cases.
Metro Manila and other high-risk areas will shift to the stricter Enhanced Community Quarantine starting Aug. 6 until Aug. 20 in an effort to contain the Delta variant, all the while sustaining vaccination efforts.
