McDonald's Philippines said Friday it started introducing strawless lids in its stores in a bid to reduce waste.
The strawless lids according to the fast food chain would replace the flat lids used for its iced beverages such as juices, soft drinks, and all variants of iced coffee.
"Through this change, we will be able make strides in our waste reduction strategy, while ensuring that our consumers are able to enjoy their iced cold drinks along with their favorite McDonald’s meals, one less straw at a time," McDonald’s Philippines Corporate Communications Head Adi Hernandez said.
Fast food chains in recent years have stepped up their efforts to reduce plastic waste by shifting to carton packaging, and paper straws. In some outlets, drinking straws are only limited to certain beverages.
In February this year, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources said plastic soft drink straws and coffee stirrers may soon be banned in the Philippines after the said items were included in the list of "non-environmentally acceptable products."
